Just a FYI

After I decided on this particular model of alarm I priced local shops. Cheapest I could find it installed was $450!

By buying the alarm new in box myself, and finding an installer with a flat fee (ie not hourly) I saved a bundle...

For a better illustration of the 6 spoke rims, take a look at the "cheap svt" thread. There's an SVT that was put up on eBay this morning with said rims on them.

Ever read that Bukowski novel about making Barfly? The Barbet Schroeder character lives in a terrible neighborhood in LA. One night the wheels get stolen off his car, and in the morning the local thugs come to his house to sell the back to him. He buys them back, but works out a deal so that they guarantee him they'll never be stolen again, by anyone. Their "insurance" doesn't apply to any other part of the car, but for his money the wheels are safe forever.

Wheel locks are a waste of money. Anyone with $10-15 can go to Sears or probably Harbor Frieght now and buy what I believe are called "gator sockets." Basically you just pound one of those over any wheel lock or stripped bolt and it will come off with ease. One small tap with a small hammer and then just remove the nut or wheel lock like you had the correct socket.

Well the kind of criminal who would steal rims isnt a big time criminal. The small tiem crook is not going to waste time or money to defeat the lcok when he/she can simply move on to the next car without the lock.

I don't think you understand. Wheel locks aren't hard or time consuming to defeat. And a lotta wheels can be worth a lotta money. Plenty of people have their wheels stolen even if they have wheel locks. If it makes you feel better having them, so be it. I don't think they do anything, and only one of my wheels has one because the guy I got them from didn't have enough normal lug nuts and so I had to use one of the locking ones he sent.

I got some 98.5 ? seven spoke wheels in the contour.org classified section for my 95 Contour and they helped dress it up a bit. Look at the classifieds and see what there is. I paid about $300.00 CDN for the wheels and tires. The tires were worn to some degree, but I did use them for a few months and ended up getting the same make and size when the time came to put on new rubber. The Yokohama AVID T4's are quiet and for my purposes perform quite well.

Thanks for the help Roger and NAPALM, I appreciate it. I will have to wait for the insurances to evaluate my loss and I will see if their offer is good. I will probably buy the rims/tires next spring because my car is now sitting on its winter rims and tires anyway. Snow is starting to fall in QC, getting pretty cold here.

Oh, btw, nice little story sdse, unlikely to happen but funny
