i ve had my svt for about a year know and everytime i look at it i get pissed off. I must have the worst paint on any 98 car ever made.(NOt to mention i changed the rack and pinion, water pump, power steering pump all within a year!, and just the other day my AC doesnt work) when i bought my car from a older guy it was dirty and it was dark out, i was more interested in finding damage on the car than the actuall paint, it had none so i bought the car for a good deal, but when i washed it and waxed it i realized how ****y the paint was, it has little cracks in the paint, also called chicken feet. Its all on the hood and really bad on one of the back doors, and a little all over.My dad had a passat from 92 that looked like it was from the showroom, eventhough he washed it once a month. Anyone know how or why this would happen to my car?i wanna repaint it, but 2000-3000 grand is a little too much for me to spend now. This is the worst car i have ever owned or heard of someone owning.hopefully all its problems are done with, but what about the paint????

you're SOL. not sure what causes it but mine was doing the same thing when i bought it over a year ago. i noticed it on the dealer's lot and he agreed to repaint the car for me before i took it home. didn't charge for it, i'm sure they got paid on the back end though. i bought the car with 38k miles on it, and when i pulled an oasis report i noticed he punched in that the car had 35k miles on it when the repaint was done. hmm... o well.

Does anyone know what causes the chicken feet? i talked the the preveious owner and he tells me he kept it garaged all the time and it was never in any accident. Im assuming that repainting the car is my only option.

Apparently, paint applied too thickly at the factory causes the "crow's feet" cracking.

Mine has that weird cracking too. Just stop washing your car, after about a year you will hardly notice it.

Sooner, or later, the dirt begins to act such as a polish does.. it fills in all the cracks at a molecular level, giving an appearance of a completely smooth paint job.. Correct, 95-gl-v6? lol As far as the bad paint goes, there have been a fdew threads on here about how bad the 98 paint jobs were, as a whole.. Re-paint, is all that's ever told... Ray

The samething (paint cracking) happened on my 98 black svt tour. I took it to my local dealership like 3 weeks ago and somehow Ford decided they would pay 75% on a new paint job. I just got my car back this week. Just keep hounding them until they do something.
