You do not have to drop the sub frame to replace the drivers control arm. All you need is a jack and a block of wood under the tranny. Remove the battery and holder. Then remove (with the jack under the tranny taking up a little weight) the front mount through bolt. With the bolt removed, you can raise and lower the tranny to slip the bolts out. I donâ??t remember which ones but I had to rest the tranny on the sub frame for one and jack it up for the other. It might be easer to remove the axle for the one under it, but I jacked the tranny full up and wrestled it out.

It's all done, and I'm glad. I did drop the subframe (disconnected both SF bolts, and front engine mount - where it connects to SF). Even doing this didn't seem to give me enough room for both bolts, particularily the large one (second one back). Perhaps I could have jacked up on it more and pried the SF down more, but as it was I had about 1 1/2" to 2" of clearance, not enough to get a 3" bolt out. It was easy enough to cut through them with a hacksaw, which took no time. The two front bolts are now upside down, with a teflon tipped nut holding them together.

I guess I could have tried taking the battery mount out, but would that give me any more room to lift the tranny? I'm just glad to have the whole thing done. The two small bolts were a PITA to get out. I actually had to drill one of them out. The car does seem to handle a little more aggile, precise turns. All in all the job cost me about $200 CDN for parts.

It didn't completely get rid of the knocking I get when going around left-hand turns though. I know my wheel bearing has a little play, maybe I can attribute that knocking to that, anybody have suggestions as to what it can be?

The problem with putting the bolts upside down is when the engine/tranny mounts start to go, the tranny case will hit the top of the bolts. This could crack the case or ware a hole in the case. This is a very bad idea.
