Lately I've been topping up the coolant reservoir a little too often. There are no obvious drips like there were
when my heater hoses went, no vapor from the tailpipe, nothing different in the oil I just changed?

Anyone got any ideas?

Check around your hose connections, could be a very small leak that is undetectable and only occurs when the car is on (pump is pushing coolant)

Look for a clean area, or some indication of a leak, green fluid (color or your coolant?) or a spot that looks unnaturally clean compared to its surroundings.

The only thing I can think of is check the carpet.
If your heater core went then the carpet around the center console should be damp or very wet!
Is your oil looking any different?

Haynes manual says "Check the dipstick and inside of the rocker arm cover
for water deposits and an oil consistency of a milkshake" head gasket, cracked cylinder...

might need to do a cooling system pressure test.

I had the same problem on my 96 Mystique. I couldn't find the source. I had it pressure tested and it took over night for it to show. Mechanic said to put some stop leak in because it didn't seem to be in the cylinders or anywhere else that was odvious. Anyways I put 2 cans in and the leak seems to have subsided. At least for the last 10000km's or so.

is the car hot when you check the level? Does the level come back up when you remove the pressure cap? if so look at the radiator for signs of failure

Now that I think about it, didn't I read a thread about air pockets in the cooling system of the Ztec engines. If you have changed your coolant recently, you might be filling in the air pockets as the bubbles get pushed through the system. If you have not done any cooling system maintenance/repair then you have a leak.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

IT could be running out through the heater core, as stated before, or the evaporator case as well. Check your passenger footwell under the floormat for dampness or stinkiness. If its the heater core or evap. case, you gotta pull the dash to replace. Some Contours had a problem with the evaporator cases splitting at a seam, and leaking. You can seal it up with some plastic weld..silicone sealant..bubble gum. Good luck!
