Saturday afternoon when I got in my car to go to work it didn't start! There have been no recent problems. My initial thought, was damn battery is dead. After calling for backup, my stepdad, to get a jump I calmed down and realized something. My car alarm was working...my lights worked in my car, my radio worked, nothing was left on..NOT THE BATTERY. He took me to work and then looked at it. For some reason, he stepped on the break, put the car in N and started it, IT WORKED! he put it in park, turned it off and it started again. The next day it worked to get to work, but at 11:30 pm when I was so ready to go home it didn't start. So I did what he had told me and it worked...put it in N and it started. The next day, I noticed that the first real 90 degree turn I did, where I was speeding up, I felt like I had no power steering. This happened several times. The last time it did it, my radio started to fade and go out, but it all came back within seconds. So far no other problems, but it seems to be going downhill. Ford said 30+ to find the problem. Depending on how long it takes. I would rather not have to do that since I have family that could replace a part if we knew what the problem was. What do you think?

I think there is a switch inside the tranny, or shifter area that prevents starting unless in P or N, it might not be registering that you are in park.

The starting problem would point to checking the Transmission Range (TR) sensor which is located on top of the transmission housing. On a '97 the black/yellow wire is connected via TR sensor contact to the black/green wire to allow start in only P or N.

Sorry, but I've no ideas re your power steering (other than check fluid level) and radio symptoms.
