I recently had a my water pump replaced. The temperature now seem to low. My tempurature guage reads on the N in normal. My thermostat was also replaced. Is this a problem?

I wouldnt worry about it. The thermostats are different and they read different. If it works it will be fine.

It raises the question as to whether or not proper temp thermostat was installed. I would guess that tolerances between 'stats of same temp rating should be within the width of one letter on the gauge.

When I lost my pump I wasn't able to get a new thermostat at the time I replaced it and after that I had a problem like yours. It would take the needle a while to actually get up to the "N" and then it really wouldn't go any higher unless I was idling for a long time in hot weather. What happened is that my thermostat had been damaged by the abnormally high coolant temp when the pump broke. The thermostat had failed in the open position and coolant was always circulating throughout the whole system even when it didn't need to.

How sure are you that the thermostat was actually replaced?

One thing I noticed about the temp gauge in our cars.

Last summer, it never read above the N. I changed the t-stat out when I changed the w/pump around November. All winter then the gauge read around RM. Fine. Then, it the spring, when the weather started to warm up again, the temp started to drop again. All this summer, it has never read above O.

Weird.

I put in a new Ford Motocraft themostat after having tried an aftermaket one..temp reads at the N mark which i think is a lot better than resting up over the L.Pump impeller is also new.

my car would run high before the water pump and thermo change in feb....here its usually 90-100+ all summer long and for the most part my car runs right at the 'o' in normal....i also think it has something to do with the filter but i dont know for sure

at any rate im glad it runs cooler and it was running a yr ago...and it is running cooler somewhat during summer than it was during winter

Question:
I have over 120,000miles on my Contour and have never had a problem with my waterpump(knock on wood). What's different about my pump than all the pumps that went bad? Were there different batches and only certain problem years?
Thanks,
Rob

I just had mine replaced for the first time @ 215,000km, i had it replaced because it was leaking. It wasn't a noticeable leak but i was doing other work on the car and the mechanic offered to do it for no extra charge, i couldnt say no.
The impeler was still in good shape, maybe there was different batches and only certain problem years.
