...and how much coolant will I have to drain to be able to take off the pump without spilling?

If your intention is to re-use the coolant, you don't really have to drain any. All work can be done from above, just place a catch pan under the engine. If I recall, I lost a litre of fluid when I changed pump and thermostat. I didn't replace the entire pump with hoses, I just replaced the impeller section.

Yeah, I am going to do the UAP/Napa metal impeller change. Just makes sense in my mind. I might do the DMD too. I think that will preserve the engine (vibration is EVIL).
