A friend of mine had his engine die today. It was making a ticking noise, so he took it to the dealership. They told him they couldn't work on it (non svt dealership) and that he would have to go to an svt dealership to get it worked on. They also said it would be fine to drive still. Less than 30 miles later the engine is dead. My friend said the ticking got more frequent and louder with rpm's and the last 2 miles it was making a wooshing sound too. Now my question is is this a case of another spun rod bearing or something else (ie bad timing chain)? Also was this fatal or can the engine still be salvaged?

Dang it, I did a search too. And the search didn't turn up the topic right below this one?

In most cases the ticking is considered 'top end' or valve train which is incorrect. It does come from the 'top end' but it is the result of a spun bearing causing the piston to travel further up the cylinder due to a spun rod bearing,it travels far enough up to 'tap' the carbon on the piston crown and cylinder head.....every one of the 'run bearing' engines I have has the 'witness' marks of the piston hitting the head....

Thanks Terry. We (Nathan and I) are assuming this was a fatal occurance and we're looking for a new engine now. Don't know if we're going to go the 3.0 or the 2.5 route yet though.
