First, Bose spends more on marketing than on product, R&D and design. If you by into Bose, it's because you failed to do some minimal homework leading you to the conclusion that sound quality equal to or better than can be had for less money.
Home theater is very subjective. I've auditioned $500 systems and $25000 systems. This is a prime example for illustrating the concept of diminishing return. My advice would be to do some homework; start with:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/index.php

dnewman in the CEG Audio forums
Go to your local shop and audition some gear. Get an idea of what costs what. The sky really is the limit; however you can have a great system without requiring a second mortgage. If the gear you want is not in your budget, consider slowly building your system. I spent 4 years to get where I'm at. One piece at a time. I'm not done yet, but I would put my system up against some costing twice as much. Again, diminishing return.
Old school types will say separates are the only way to go. I do not agree - some of the newer all in one components provide stunning performance at a very reasonable price.
If you want mid grade to high end, do not overlook E-Bay for used gear. Gear just 1 to 2 years old can be had for outrageously low prices. The performance will still be outstanding.
My Theatre is built in my basement and measures 13 x 20.

As for brands, bear in mind, that you usually get what you pay for. Also note that the speaker system is what you interface with. It has the most impact on how YOU hear something. Having said that, when it comes to speakers, my next set will be B&W. Period.

Wouldn't it have been better to say it's performance was piss-poor, instead of working like crap!? Unless the guy crapped on it, too.
Regardless, there's a ton of good information here. What I would honestly avoid doing is going through the Home Theater magazines, as, IMHO, they tend to review only the priciest, high-end gear. The Crutchfield catalog is good to get some great ideas about what gear you would like, then go hunt on your own for better prices. While I don't find them inflated, I don't see a big difference between them and retail, which has the instant gratification of purchasing your gear and taking it home with you.
Yes, it's true, you'll generally get what you pay for, but, it's entirely possible to find a gem (*cough* cambridge soundworkds *cough*), and it's entirely possible to overpay (as is the case with Bose). Just test some gear out. There's got to be at least one shop in your area that has a listening room with a handful of different gear that you can listen to. Look for highs, lows, mids, make sure the sound isn't muffled, make sure it's not tinny. Just keep what YOU want in mind- do you want it to last (upgradeable, which can be pricey), do you want it to blow your walls down, or just SOUND GOOD? Set yourself a quality point, search around, then find something in the price you like that offers the same quality.
And... you can't go wrong with B&W.... My dad actually managed to find a pair of their woofers in a car's trunk at a local used auto parts pavilion (junkyard for the uninitiated), and they only charged him $10/each... suffice to say they're in his truck now!!!

A bit pricey yes, but like anything you will buy, when you are buying name brand items, where lots of R & D is put into the product, you'll pay. Bose sound is superior to many other brands to me and as a Bose product owner, I'll vouche for them any day.
If you like them and they are worth the money to you, by all means recommend them. But, they provide far from accurate musical reproduction. The AM series does what it was designed to do, which is remain inconspicuous. You can do orders of magnitude better for less money than B*se.

Klipsch speakers are simply amazing. Having owned the complete reference series (rf3, rc3, rs3) for a few years now, I have nothing but praise for them. The horns provide amazing clarity at low levels, and when cranked they sound even better. These speakers are so detailed for both music and HT that I stopped auditioning any other speakers after I heard them. Make sure you audition them before you buy them, as the horns are not for everyone. But one listen, and I was sold.
If you're going to overkill in any one area, do it in speakers. They are the most important part of any good setup, and they'll last you far longer than any other piece of equipment.

For speakers in the 650.00 range, I think the Energy Take 5 system is hard to beat, but there are other good choices. Klipsch Quintet sound pretty good for the very low cost you can find them for.
If you are willing to go the DIY route and have the skills tob build some enclosures, I would highly recommend making your own speakers, or considering a kit.
Is your basement unfinished as of now? There are a couple of options that I can give you if you are interested.

Bose are the worst deal in audio on the market. They are maybe on par with the speakers you would buy at walmart only WAY more expensive. The power of marketing... Anyone who seriously compares Bose with anything else in the price range would tell you that. Why do think that they won't post specs on their product? Before you buy anything, check out audioreview.com. Tons of consumer reviews on about every product you could think of.
