I bought a Motorcraft battery from a (non-chain) parts store that specializes in Ford parts. Not sure if that qualifies as 'special order' but you may be surprised at the price if you check it out. The Motorcraft was significantly less $$$ than the Die Hard International Special Gold Whatever edition that Sears wanted to sell me, I think ~$50 as opposed to $90.
Is it a piece of crap? Can't say for sure but the first one lasted 7 years and was still working when I replaced it.

I had my battery replaced by my Ford dealer when it was 5 years old even though it was still working. The cost was $59.95 installed. This was for their Motorcraft battery.

My small town Ford dealer wanted $133 for a battery, can you believe it? Found a good deal at K-Mart, where I've bought batteries before. WalMart did not have the size.

I just bought a new Motorcraft battery at my local Ford dealer. 84 month warranty and IIRC it was ~$70. It wasn't the same battery that came with the car - it has been obsoleted and the new battery has more CCAs, so I was OK with that. Hey, the stock battery lasted 5 years and only kicked b/c I let it get discharged by leaving a door open when I was working on my suspension.

Advance Auto *does* carry a battery for the Contour. It's an Autocraft #47-1. Excellent battery line - see few of them come back defective. Price is $59.99 - warranty is 72 months, first 2 years free replacement. The # was accicentally deleted from the database listing for the Contour for some reason - maybe happened when we changed systems - it was there a few months ago - anyway the store computer won't show it - I'm trying to get them to correct it.
I have had one in my 'tour for a few months now - no problems.
The Optima ($129 gel batt - no acid) that we sell is a one size fits all deal. I don't know if it will physically fit in the 'tour. I can measure it today at work if you need the info. Have had good feedback on it - customers who have bought one love it.

Yeah the Optima fits, i think it's even a bit smaller than the stock battery. But who says you cant kill an optima battery. I had a bad wiring with my radio amplifier and killed my Optima Battery. Of course I jumped it and it works fine, but just thought it would last a little longer.
