For the past few months, there's been a high-pitched squeak coming from my right rear wheel. Only happens during the first mile or so of driving. Not constant - it has a rhythm to it, which made me think it was brake-related.

I cleaned and lubed the caliper pins and put some Permatex on the back of the pads (which still had plenty of material left). Rotor turns freely, so parking brake isn't sticking.

Any ideas?

My rear wheel bearings started getting noisy at about 60K miles, but they didn't squeak, just made sort of a WrrrrrWrrrrrWrrrr sound. Can you get it to squeak if you jack the car and spin the wheel? wheelbearing/hubs for the rear are about $45 and are easy to change if you have rear disks.

Thanks for the response. Doesn't squeak if I turn it by hand. While I had it jacked up, I checked to see if the wheel would wobble. It didn't. What are the other signs of a bad wheel bearing?

I had a squeak in the back passenger side as well. I searched for quite some time for that noise. (I thought something was in my trunk to cause it) ha ha. My springs were the cause. The spring on the passenger side was broken in 5 different places, and my driver side was broken but not as bad. The Ford dealership that I went to said that was a common problem for the Contour. So, check the springs. I also changed out the struts, just to be safe, especially since I didn't want to bring it back a 2nd time for repair.
