Is there any easy way I can determine whether its my battery or alternator? I've had to get it jumped for just having the radio on for 10 minutes. Occassionally it will almost kill at stop lights or right after its started. SO I cant decide which is bad. Thanks

Do you happen to live by an Autozone, go there they will come out and scan your entire charging system, for free.

It'd help to know what kind of car you have.

My guess would be battery, or maybe even both. Take the battery to autozone or advanced auto, they'll test it out for you. The battery supplies the power to the car, and the alternator sends power to the battery, in essence charging it. So i'd say that the battery isn't holding a charge. In my personal experiences, the alternator either works or it doesn't. (Please, if I am wrong on this last part, someone correct me)

it could be just the battery or just the alternator or maybe neither..... first you have to start off with a fully charged battery then a test it run on the battery and the alternator....if you dont have any meters just go to an auto zone and let them give you a free test to see if the battery or the alternator is the problem.. might just be that the clamps on the battery cables are tarnished with sulfuric acide buildup(the white residue on the clamps???
or inside the clamps... if you have a meter get the battery charged and see if it holds the charge(where you have it charged then can do a quick charge and test on it to make sure it holds the charge(but if you start off with a low battery then you have trouble making the test.....).....
hope this helps.

I had a similar problem. Since I had used my battery for a number of years I thought the residual value of the battery on my car is only $10....So I just replaced the battery and problem was gone. If you can test it great!! or just replace the battery if you have already gor plenty of use out of it and it is now on borrowed time.
