I have a 95 contour GL ATX with the zetec. I was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem... when the car is in drive and you are stopped it shakes really bad, it gets like 10x's worse when the a/c is on. The vibration goes aways once you start driving. I've had it looked at by a few mechanics and they seem to think its the motor mounts. I replaced the passenger hydraulic mount and the front mount and still no luck! Also found the belt tensioner was busted up. Replaced that. It got a little better. What the hell could it be? Should i replace the rear mount and the tranny mount??? Someone suggested it could be a bad harmonic balancer...

Try the other motor mount, what have you got to lose? Also, how about a tune-up, plug wires, etc.

I seem to remember the idler pulley on the Zetec being a fairly common item to wear out and give the symptoms you mention. Might want to try searcing the zetec forum or post there if you don't find anything. (Look for pulley)

Thanks for the advice... I think replacing the other mounts is what i'm gonna have to do cause the vibration is so annoying and I don't know what else to do. As far as a tune-up, I did one like 2 or 3 months ago... a complete tune up at that. Funny thing I just remembered, the salesman who sold me the car told me that ALL contours shake and vibrate. I didn't believe his lying ass but I wanted the car anyway. Anyone else have the same problem i'm having?

I have been working on my wife's 96 gl for the
last four months.
To date I have replaced:
all four motor mounts
plugs
plug wires
iac valve
water pump
accy belt (twice)
idler pully
Got to looking this afternoon and I think the tension pully is weak.
I think that about covers it.
Did I leave anything out....don't think so.
Black 96 gl
mostly unchanged
except for the urge to have it crushed

Mine shakes too and it's nerve racking! I need to know what'll fix it as well.
