I noticed that after a week when I spayed the TB as prescribed on the can, I have a CEL Light. I also noticed that the same day I had a CEL light, that the gas cap was off. But I did tigthen the gas cap and disconnnect the battey cables for 5 min and CEL temp diappears. I also check the air filter, never had the wires replaced, but had the plugs replace 25000-30000kms ago. Could it just be the TB cleaner. Did the gas cap off and driving the vehichle cause a problem? Any ideas. Thanks in advance!!!

Sorry for double posting, but I also traded that 2001 cav with major dependability problems. I traded for a 2001 Mazda Protege SE. Anybody know of any good protege sites?? Thanks again.

Spraying TB cleaner into the intake will only remove some surface coating and you might have a heavier buildup requiring removal & cleaning of the intake manifolds. (maybe?) Driving without the gas cap wont cause any damage although it may set a CEL which should go away once the cap is replaced. The TB cleaner should not hurt anything and/or cause future CELs. To know if your CEL has anything to do with a dirty intake, you should get the code "scanned" from the PCM computer. Autozone and other part stores will frequently do this for free. Post your codes and let us know what engine, trans, mileage, and mods you have on your car. The codes are also listed here: http://contour.org/FAQ/FAQ.cgi?s=probs&display=checkengine

Stephen[/b]You've got to be kidding me. If you're using a cleaner that contains sulfuric acid, I can see their point. Otherwise, Ford needs to sic their attournies on STP, Castrol and everyone else that makes carb/TB cleaner. Ask the idiot if Ford recommends replacing windshields when they get bug-spattered instead of cleaning them... TB cleaner shouldn't cause you any problems whatsoever. I've used it on a number of cars ('82 Chevy, '89 SHO, '93 SHO, '99 Contour SVT '00 Vette) with no ill effects at all. Many folks on this Board have cleaned TB's as well as upper and lower intakes and have reported excellent results.

Why then is there the warning sticker on the TB telling you NOT to spray cleaner down there? Stephen P.S. Did all the other TB's that you cleaned also have the protective coating on them?

I've seen it on my '99 SVT 'Tour and if I recollect clearly, both my '89 and '93 SHOs had the same stickers on the TB's (anyone that's got a SHO and can check their TB, correct me if I'm wrong).
I've had a very similar discussion before with a mechanic about 8 years ago (i was wary about cleaning them myself, which is why I swear I had those damn stickers on my SHO's). I was told to go ahead and clean the gunk out with a carb/TB cleaner that was safe for FI engines, as my TB's on both the '89 and '93 would get rather nasty.
Now, having said this, don't let the TB SOAK in the cleaner. Spray it and then quickly wipe it off with paper towels or some cotton shop cloths. As you wouldn't take steel wool and gasoline to a teflon pan to clean it, go easy on the inside of the TB.

Ah, NO! :p If there wasn't any coating there, there would be more dirt in the TB! Just because there IS a coating in there, doesn't make it impossible to get dirty, only harder to get dirty! Stephen

The sticker essentially warns that the teflon (or whatever) coating can be easily scratched off. A soft cloth and TB cleaner won't hurt it anymore than hot exhuast gas from the EGR ports will. As mentioned the coating is not that effective anyway or we wouldn't have the EGR buildup probems many have experienced and cleaned up. I've not seen any faster buildup of gunk or ill effects from gently cleaning the TB and upper intake ports with TB cleaner. (Over 40K miles since initial cleaning...)
