...and perish the thought, I was disappointed with the low end performance. Since my "normal" driving has me running under 4k, I was hoping for more low rpm oomph.

So I'm thinking it's either the 3L or the other pressurization option should I decide to upgrade the cugr. Comments?

The s/c is really a dog down low. The way I feel about cars right now I would go get a beater. If I liked cars I'd go turbo, but it depends on how much you want to spend.

Comments... Well yeah...

You were surprised it lacked low end grunt. The S/C doesn't make any appreciable boost until well beyond low and midrange rpm levels. Therefore it's no different then a non S/C'd car of the same mods until that point.

Personally I'm dissatisfied with 100% of Vortech's POS kit myself and I don't even own one.

The 3L is definitely a kick in the pants mods. Significant low and mid range power increase with slightly less gains up top "comparably"

A Turbo is just fat with power everywhere. The T28 in the kit is all done by 6500rpm (I.E. great power under the curve!) so you don't have to rev the piss out of the engine just to make some power.

Surely I would have thought you would have been even more dissatisfied, like 110% atleast.....lol

If my SC 3L gets finished (it will, just taken some time to do) it will have the smallest pulley on it and that should create boost around 2500-2700rpm, I did the math a long time ago, so my memory may deceive me a little. Since I am using a straight 3L (no SVT cams) low end should be pretty nice and I wont need to go above 6500rpm to make full boost too

I'm proud owner 99 Cougar with a Vortech s/c kit. I too was pretty disappointed with the initial performance, especially below 3k rpm. I purchased the kit for added performance. The s/c is not as powerful as the turbo but when it gets going man it's fun as hell to drive. If you launch it right you can beat if not hang with most of the cars on the road today. I recently had to take off my heavy 19" chrome wheeels and put back on my stock 16"'s. I never realized how much the weight of wheels have on performance, it's like a whole new car. My cougar is so much more fun to drive now that I'm haven't even put my 19"'s back on yet. Again yeah the s/c isn't as fast as the turbo kits but its tons better than stock. I've had 10,000 miles of pure driving pleasure, and hopefully I'll have 30,000 more. Later

I get sick of people ragging on the SC system. It does exactly what its supposed to do...a 100 shot of nitrous oxide all on tap all the time!

Saying your going to a 3L now because of the lack of low end torque of a SC 2.5L is just plain wrong. There is no comparison there! Why would you rather trade 30-40 hp for a little more low end versus over 100hp up top? (where it matters by the way)

You remember your driving a V6 right? If you want all the power to show up under 4000rpm...save your money and buy a damn V8! Its a shame you have a car that has so much enginering into the dual intake system and you never even activate the IMRC!

I agree dude. After 1st gear the Vortech screams all the way to 7600 rpm. So learn to down shift and the power is there.

Kinger,

This guy was referring to his Cougar, not an SVT.

The 2.5L vortech S/C on a cougar or non-svt 2.5L doesn't do anywhere near as good as a S/C on an SVT. The SVT starts with 200HP and ends with the S/C at around 300HP with a 7600 redline to do it; ranging from 240's-270's at the wheels.
The stock 2.5's are in the 210's-240's with just a S/C on them.
How is that WAY better than a good 3L swap/hybrid?
Not just that, but the 3L has the SVT 2.5L S/C'd on torque all the way to ~5000 rpm, ONLY then does the vortech surpass it.
I'm sure it kills the non SVT 2.5L on torque probably even further up the rpm range.
A bet a non-svt S/C'd cougar can't even beat a GOOD 200+wHP 3L through the 1/4 mile. I bet the average bolt-on S/C'd SVT's will tie even or only slightly beat a higher HP 3L through the 1/4, maybe a higher trapp but not a better time.

Hell, I sucked at drag racing last year (still aren't great) and the 2nd time out with my 3L I turned 14.8 at 96MPH.

Given all these facts and the bigger fact that it has around town torque, take-off torque and still gets about the same fuel economy as the 2.5L (mine did) AND that its about $1K cheaper to do, I think it is a very viable option.

You know I had thought of putting 120% to really show my true feelings for it but chose to use a "little" restraint.
