Michelin Artic Alpins.

Crazy glue on snow and ice (I'm being dramatic, but you get the point).

Absolutely SUCK in any other weather, though.

Never personally used them, but I've heard nothing but really good things about them. I personally use Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice. I have a 300ft driveway w/ a steady incline and never got stuck once last year (when I wasn't using my Explorer) through all the nasty snow we had here in NEPA.

Where at in NEPA? I am from the Youngstown/Sharon area.

Oh ya, and good decision on the Googyears. I am getting ready to get some new tires for the winter as well.

I plan to get some ContiExtreme Contact High Performance All Season tires in the next couple of weeks.

Seem to be a good price and they get good reviews. Tire Rack Review

The way I see it even in winter there is snow/ice on the roads maybe 10 percent of the time here in the city. I am not willing to have tires that drive like crap 90 percent of the time. Furthermore, I am not willing to drive steel wheels and have my car look poopy 3-4 months out of the year.

Goodyear Eagle UltraGrip....more of a high performance winter tire (H-rated) along the lines of Michelin Pilot Alpin or Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22. Not as much of a performance drop-off compared to many of the soft compound ice tires.

Motomaster (Canadian Tire) Nordic Trak's... with steel studs. A bit "hummy" at low speeds, but they're awesome on ice. I didn't like that the high tech "studless" winter tires usually only have 2 component rubber (hence the traction) for the first 1/2 (or less) of their tread life. After that, you're just running the equivalent of all season tires (1/2 worn out ones at that). Doesn't seem like good value, considering they're pricey to start with.

Nokian Hakka 1s are the best SNOW only tire you will buy. I ran them on my Miata for 2 years and they rocked in snow and wore pretty well too. Packed snow and ice, not much better than all seasons. Dry roads, not bad, pretty equal to all seasons.

What conditions will you be driving in?
If lots of unplowed snowy roads, the Hakka 1s are the way to go.
If usually plowed (dry roads) or packed snow roads, the Artic Alpins are the best IMHO. I've owned Blizzaks and the Artic Alpins give equal if not better snow/ice grip and much better dry road handling than the very mushy Blizzaks. I've got a set on Focus wheels for the winter waiting to be put on. Rocketed past many an SUV in a ditch last winter on those
