This question does not pertain to a Contour, but I figure that somebody can still answer my question as I may eventually have this problem in a Contour. My neighbor has a Mazda truck. It has little power at high rpms, esp. at full throttle. It seems to lurch and jump, perhaps like its starving for fuel. I checked fuel filter (its up in the engine compartment instead of at tank) and all I could see was it was about 1/3 full. I changed it out with a brand new one. After running it for a while the level is about the same, whereas when I owned the truck it was always full. Does this indicate a bad fuel pump, or a fuel pump this is clogged? I should mention that the truck is not fuel injected, but carbeurated. (did I spell that right?) I know it could be another problem, but do you thinks its worth having the fuel pump replaced? Its about 38.00 for the certified Mazda part but since I am not experienced with fuel pumps I would be afraid to attempt repairs myself so labor would run the cost higher than my neighbor would prefer. Any suggestions, comments, insights? Thanks to all who reply.

I'm guessing that this truck has a mechanical fuel pump because of the type of filter you describe, and the price of the pump. Is entirely possible that the pump is failing, as I've had similar symptoms of failing pumps. Don't be afraid of replacing this pump. I'm still guessing, but if it's indeed a mechanical pump, it's mounted on the engine, not in the fuel tank. Many of these only require the switching of two bolts and two hoses to replace. It's a pretty easy job. And, no you did not spell carburetor properly, .

Thank you so much for the reply and good news. If its that easy, even I can probably do it. I am pretty sure that it is engine mounted right behind the air cleaner at the top near teh winshield. I will see what I can do about replacing it. Thanks again and I'll update in a few weeks when I get the part and am able to install it (or let somebody else).
