I found a couple similar posts, but without any replies...
I have a 98 'tour 2.5L V6, 52k miles. Just recently (in the last month or so) I've noticed a very high-pitched squeal/whistle coming from the engine, like the sound a TV makes when you first turn it on. It's not there when I start the engine, but only after about 15 minutes of driving. The pitch seems to go higher as RPMs increase.
I've had a few people listen; one suggested belts, one suggested pullies, and one was adamant that it was the alternator. I'm leaning towards the alternator myself, anyone have any other suggestions?

When your secondaries are getting carbon caked, they start to make a whistling sound.
The Alternator whine is there all the time and changers pitch with the rpm.

This is more than the normal alternator whine, though. Its very loud and can be heard half a block or so away. People are routinely turning heads across the street when they hear my car.
Since I'm at the correct mileage, it also crossed my mind that the water pump might be getting ready to fail, too, but most of the failure stories mention no warning whatsoever. Could it be possible for the water pump to be making that noise?

Well, I finally broke down and took it to the dealer to check out the sound and fix my intermittent wipers which haven't worked in two months.
They think that the part causing the whistle is covered under a TSB, but the part's not in stock. They didn't tell me which part it was.
Anyone know how long it usually takes for a Ford dealer (Blue Oval certified) to get a TSB'd part in? Better yet, anyone have any idea what part it might be?

Sounds like it could be vacuum noise or even tranny noises. Take it to a shop and let them listen. Could be 40,000 different things.

I guess I was making the assumption that to be certified (for anything) you must prove that you're better than the rest, and that it's a distinction.
Of course it wouldn't surprise me if this Blue Oval stuff is just another marketing ploy by a huge corporation.

[/b] I have a high-pitch noise coming from my Duratec, and it's the MAF sensor. If you poke at it quite hard with your finger, the noise stops. Maybe this is the noise you're hearing.. I'm not decided yet if I'll try cleaning the MAF myself - I'm not sure this would fix it. Replacing the sensor is not an option for now, the sucker is like 170$ (Canadian "Monopoly" money)... Kyo

ever since my second water pump pop ive had a weird noise too, thats how i knew something was amiss in the engine. after replacement it has never went away.
mine sounds like alternator whine also. but its not that. since then ive had my 60k maintenance done. been to 2-3 different shops who put some device to listen to pulleys and stuff and they say it sounds normal.
no performance hits or anything, just some strange noise exactly how you say it, mine isnt that loud though.

Where is the MAF? Is it the sensor in the air filter compartment? I don't have my Haynes' manual handy to check. The car is back at the Ford dealer for the second time now. They replaced the serp. belt and idler pulley on Wednesday to the tune of $190US, but the sound is still there. Now its up to them to fix the problem at their expense.
