Ok, my '99 CSVT has 50k miles on the stock clutch. My problem is shifting. It is very very hard to shift into gear when I start my car when it's cooled down. Sometimes I have to try several times with hard thrust to get the car into reverse when i start it up. I changed the tranny fluid 5k miles ago with Ford ATF. I bled the clutch yesterday, no air pockets. I put in new brake fluid. Still shifting terrible. When I am doing about 20mph in 2nd gear and decide to slow down and drop it into 1st gear around 15mph, I have to push it very very hard into 1st in order for it to engage. I can shift nice and smooth when the car is off. Haynes says to try and adjust the shift linkage, but I really have no clue and I have researched the problem, but have come up with no solutions. Any advice would be well appreciated. Also, I have about 1.5" of initial play with my clutch pedal. It kinda feels loose or no pressure until I push it in about an 1.5".

its entirely normal to have hard shifting in a ford manual transaxle when its cold. try upgrading to a fully synthetic tranny fluid. also, my clutch has exactly the same amount of play in the pedal...its a contour thing...my clutch is brand new.
and you should NEVER try to downshift to first gear... unless your RPMS are below 1,000 and your doing less than 10MPH...im surprised you even got it into first at all. thats very hard on the clutch my friend.

I'm sorry but, I actually used Amzoil Synthetic. I completely forgot until I went and looked up what I wrote in my maintenance log book. So I used the best and it is a terrible feeling when I shift.

Did you add the required amount of Friction Modifier? Synchros need friction to work...

No, I never used any friction modifier. Can I get the ford friction modifier from another place besides the dealership?

get it from the dealership, it costs something like $5. do a search for the part #, or maybe it is in the faq section somewhere.

Synthetic fluid (very "slippery") without the required amount friction modifier is not a good idea. Synchros need friction to work, which is why you're grinding while shifting.
If your fluid has been in the trans for a while, you may want to just change it out anyway. Redline MTL (no additional friction modifier needed) has been getting good reviews. I personally use the Ford synthetic ATF ($$$) with the friction modifier, and the tranny shifts great. Try doing a search, there is a ton of information available on this site.

Just for the record! 1. Ford doesn't use friction modifier in the trans from the factory. 2. There is still plenty of friction between the metal even with just straight AFT in the transmission for the synchros to work if they are not worn. 3. The friction modifier will help increase the friction in the synchros and probably help the grind. 4. The friction modifier will break down the fluid and make it less protective for the gears in the transmission. How much FM you use depends, but I would put 1 oz in at a time until the grind goes away, not exceeding about 2 oz.
I put 2 oz FM + ATF in my transmission with the new torsen and it sounded like a bucket of bolts from the lack of protection. It also had plenty of silver glitter in it when I changed it! Maybe 1 oz would have been better, or maybe none at all for the break-in. Then I shifted to mobil one synthetic gear oil and it had no noise and very little metal glitter. After flushing the transmission with ATF again, I stuck in the redline. Well, the torsen is broke-in now and with the MTL there is no noise.
I just want people to be cautious with its use because a stock diff may not give warning if it is wearing too much due to inadequate lubrication.

FWIW, Ford specifies the use of friction modifier in the service manuals for '95 and '96 models. However, I did not see it in the '98 manual.
