If the voltage regulator is located in the alt. Then what are the three wires, on one plug beside the large one to the battery and the single connector one, coming out of the alt. for?

From a post made by Terry further down the list, he mentions the 3 wires into the alternator. THREE connections on the alternator...ONE HEAVY '+' cable from battery...a 'multi-pin plug to the regulator/brushes AND a SINGLE SPADE connector that goes in the bottom of the alternator for the 'excite' field Maybe this will help to clear that up some. I would just make sure you plug them all in and dont' forget one.

Large Wire: Output Small Orange Wire: 12V to Field Coil Small Green Black: 12V to Alternator Light on Dash
The regulator controls the voltage on the rotor (Rotating part of alternator). The higher the voltage, the stronger the rotating magnetic field, the higher the output from the alternator. The alternator makes A/C voltage. The A/C goes through 6 diaodes and becomes DC.
Whats interesting is the Zetec and Duratec Alternators are different. The Duratec has a gray jumper as well as the three wires you see. Not sure what the jumper does.

As far as I know the Contour's alternator is the same design alternator as used in other 90s Ford cars. It's known as a "3G" alternator, which is available in 95A and 130A versions (maybe 150A, not sure).
Other than that, the only differences are mounting hole locations.
(By the way, there is a 2G alternator, it's internally regulated, has an external fan, and has a spade connector for the output. Introduced in 1986 and I think Ford had it completly phased out by 1995. Only available in 65A versions that I know of, unless it's been rewound for higher output).

DO NOT SAY THE "A" WORD TOO MUCH AROUND ME!!!! I MAY JUST COME UNGLUED!!!!!!!
Yup! Mine took three days, a 175a fuse, and a BROKEN 13mm socket to complete. Oh and it was one of the good sockets too. Ya know, the ones that don't have all the many teeth. It is supposed to be so that you can apply more torque because it has more socket area that contacts the bolt. Yeah I put three cracks in it but at least the bolt is in. And who in their right mind put the frekin tensioner in the location that it is at with half an inch of clearance between it and the body of the car?! Why not at the top of the belt???? HMMMMMMM....because they were......nevermind. I still love my Mystique but geez!
'96 Mystique, Zetec, MTX. ---Mods--- Removed both intake resonators and airbox. Installed APC air filter and APC crankcase ventilation filter. Removed exhaust resonator. Installed XM Satellite Radio. Replaced bad alternator and 175a fusible link...much fun! Intake plenum---GONE!!!! My car growls louder than yours. If I can't buy it, I'll build it...Trust Me!!!!

"multi-pin plug to the regulator/brushes" So were do these three wires go? They don't show up on my Haines manual wiring diagram. It show the large one to the battery via the starter and a smaller wire to the instrument cluster for the alt. light.
