ford told me that i need to replace the cats cause i'm getting the code P0430 and they want $2295 to get it done. so i'm gonna order the parts by myself and have other shop to do it for me. my question is, svt's have 3 cats? do i have to replace all of them? are there any other parts i also have to replace with the cats? i'm planning to get the magnaflow instead of the oem cats. do you guys know what's the part# for the magnaflow high flow cats for a 98 svt and where can i buy them for cheap? how much is the labor gonna be?
thanks
eric

There are emissions controls in the manifolds, then there is the main catalytic converter, and then there is your resonator and mufflers. But it all depends on which element is not working (throwing the CEL)

If I were you (depending on which element of your emissions controls is broken), I'd simply get a new cat, and some MIL eliminators. The main catalytic converter is all you need to pass emissions and be environmentally friendly. And the MIL eliminators will get rid of your CEL from the manifolds.

Your other options are to pay the 2 grand and get all factory parts (huge waste of money IMHO), or you could get some MSDS headers and y pipe and a new main cat!

Good luck!!

The only CATS that will give you a code are the pre-cats located in the exhaust manifolds.. which is why it costs so much.

I would either guy your pre-cats and get MIL eliminators or just get some MSDS headers... for like 1/4 of the cost of getting the crappy stock ones replaced.

thanks guys for replying so quickly.
so the cheapest way for me to do is get the new pre-cats(or can i just cut them?) and some MIL eliminators, right? how much do the eliminators cost? where can i get them? also, i don't have to replace the main cat, right?
thanks again
eric

You will want to gut the pre-cats meaning taking all of the honeycomb material out of the cats themselves... You can get the MIL eliminators from Dallas Mustang for $30.00 each, so $60.00 total... 1-800-MUSTANG for the MIL's

If you don't feel like gutting the precats on your own you can buy pre gutted ems from www.buckshotmotorsports.com just look under misc services and scroll down to optimized EMs. $80 isn't bad if you don't feel confident on doing it youself or don't have the time.

If your pre-cats are bad, theres a good chance part of the catalyst material has blown down the exhaust and lodged in the main cat. You may need to replace this also. (About $80 on the net...)

Freakshow, have you gotten these Buckshot gutted headers on your car?

If so, did they make a big difference in the sound of your car (i.e. is it much louder)?

No I haven't but I'm considering it as a cheapt alternative to MSDS headers and me being lazy and without a garage I wouldn't have to gut my own. These aren't actually header but stock exhuast manifolds that THEY gut for you then you swap em out and I believe send them your stockers in return. Basically, talk to anyone who has gutted their precats and you will have your answer. You may also be able to find something in the search (search for several months ago I think) under the phrase mystery mod.
