Just cleaned the UIM on my brothers car. While I was in town doing other errands he put new plugs and wires in. Upon arriving back at the car he told me that he hadn't gapped the plugs according to the How-To. The plugs are OEM as suggested in other threads as a the wires. After re-assembling the engine and him taking it for a test drive, he limped home with a bit of smoke coming from the engine bay and the temperature gauge read high his remark was the engine was missing.
We searched the engine for hoses and sensors left unattached but found none. Is the problem most likely a result of not gapping the plugs as I suspect. Please help!

to gap the plugs you need a spark plug gapper....it's like .50 cents at the parts store, but that is probably not your entire problem. Try making sure the wires and plugs are in the exact right order. If not, this will cause your car to run like schmutz. Also try resetting the PCM. Just a few suggestions.

To get the most acurate gap, use a feeler gauge.

Yes defanately check your wires and make SURE they're right. That's what it sounds like.

Just go to Autozone and look for something like this... This is the Craftsman offset gauge like I have, but they do have to be offset of course. Just some plain gauges will do fine.

That looks like a nice feeler gauge set but you should also have a tool that can help set the gap. Most inexpensive gapping tools include something to help spread or close the gap. It is important not to pry the side wire open with something that puts pressure on the center electrode. You can damage the center electrode. More easily on some brands of plugs than others. The worst plug for this I can think of is a non platinum Bosch.

Well, I failed to mention that during the reassembly of the intake plenum, my brother (thank god it wasn't me) tightened the #5 plenum bolt too much and it broke. This is causing a small vaccum leak which is why at low rpm/throttle he experiences the studdering and misfire. Getting a new bolt today and hoping that all goes well.
Thanks for the reply, I did pick up a gap tool and low and behold, they came out of the package nearly gapped perfectly.
