I was driving into work this morning, listening to the radio. All of a sudden, I noticed a burning smell. A couple minutes later, the speakers went dead. It wouldn't play a CD either, so I turned the head unit off.

The sound system hasn't been touched yet, stock head unit, "premium" amp, and speakers. But for a few months now, one of my speakers would occasionally make a popping/crackling noise when I adjusted the volume. Does it sound like some part of my system finally died? I guess it might be time for an upgrade.

sounds like there may be a short some where, i would take the head unit out (remember to unplug the battery) and inspect the wiring.

I'd take the head unit out and smash it with a bat

sounds like a fuse...I've burnt so many fuses by working without disconnecting the battery, I usually smell it before I even know which one i blew.

Do you know which fuse it would likely be? I found #34 by searching old posts and #32 from the Haynes manual. But since it said the fuse panel was behind the glove box, I'm putting much faith in what it says.

Anyway both of those fuses were fine. I guess I need to start checking wiring connections... what am I looking for, will there be burned looking plastic or wires?

I believe they used a mondeo or mystique to write the haynes manual, in which case there is a driver's side glove box which may be what they're referring to.

When I ever get it out, I'll be seriously tempted to, HTM I spent the better part of an hour trying to get the damn head unit out last night. I even have the U-shaped removal tools. I popped them into the holes and tried to pull it out but all I managed to do is yank the face off the CD player. Guess I might have to remove the dash...

What's a voice coil? Is that part of a speaker? I'd rather not pull every stinkin fuse in the panel so maybe I'll yank off the door panels next and take a peek at the speakers.
