Does anybody have an alignment tool that they would sell? This tool looks pretty simple and I could probably make one if I knew the thickness. I'm getting ready to change the timing belt on my daughter's contour and want to get everything ready in advance. I will change the water pump while I have it apart. Should I also plan on changing any of the pulleys? (are they only available from the Ford dealer?) Thanks for any help that you can give. Chas Randolph crandolph@woh.rr.com

if you get the engine to TDC and index everything very well you do not need the cam tool. Yes the cams will turn but not that much, maybe half to a hole tooth. Mark the crank to the block, and the cams to the cover and make sure the marks line up when you put the new belt on. This is how we changed the belt on my car at 104k and I now have 1205xxk on the car and it is still running great

What if your car has come (even if it's a little) out of time. You SHOULD use the cam tool.

Yeah u should use the cam tool but as he said above u don't ncessarily have to have it. I have done cams without the tool before and have gotten everything to line up right. But it is definitly more of a pain in the but.

that would be something to check for first. But as far as i am concerned a well maintained car shouldn't have a issue like that
I am still learning but my father was a mechanic out of hs and he has been working on cars for nearly 30 yrs now, I trust what he does, and suggests
but by all means if you feel better using a cam tool please do.
You could make your own, the goal is to keep the cams from moving when the belt comes off.

just remembered another way tot change the belt that I searched for or was told about on the old board.
cut just the front half of the old belt off, so that some of the belt is left to hold the cams and the timing. then slide the new belt on and cut the rest of the old belt off and then finish installing the new belt
