Hey friendly and helpful CEGers, I was wondering if anyone on here had experience with warped heads. I have been loosing coolant and getting carbon monoxide in my coolant. I was refilling my reservoir every 8 days or so. Ford took my heads off and found one to be one three thousandths of an inch off. Is that enough to cause all my problems? Or do you think there is something wrong with the block? I did run a search but didn't see anything specific to measurements.

Head gasket surface flatness spec from '97 service manual states the following for both block and head:

.025/25 x 25.050/150 x 150

Perhaps another member can translate.

That may be enough to cause a leak.

I can't comment on the Ford Specifications but when I used to "turn a wrench" for a living in the early-to-mid 1980's, the rule of thumb for overhead cam cylinder heads is "If they are warped more than two-thousandths of an inch, they must be replaced". The reason they must be replaced is the camshaft bore is also warped which could cause it to seize-up leading to catastrophic engine failure.

Since you didn't specify that this is actually a Contour, if the car is not an overhead cam engine, then you should be able to get the heads resurfaced to cure the warpage.

Can't the head be ground down flat again? Sounds like they need to take less than a hairs width.

Machine shop??

isn't the norm .003" or 3 thousands of a inch for the mating surfaces? a machininst can easily bring the head and block into those tolerances.

Flatness 0.025mm per 25x25mm region
Flatness 0.050mm per 150x150 region
Addionally, the total flatness error is 0.080mm. That's across the entire head surface.

So, 80 microns is about 3 mil's. I thought so. I didn't understand what the 25x25 was all about. now I do.

I talked to the guy at FORD. He said it was enough to cause it. Hey took everything off the old head. . . ordered a new head and are going to put everything back on the new head. He did not say anything about replacing the camshaft. Does anyone think that it was damaged also. I know mrspindlelegs eluded to that. I am so glad they are replacing the head an not trying to resurface it. I still don't get the gasket surface flatness spec. I am in I.T. not engineering The car being worked on is the one stated in my signature.

Most likely not. The duratec cams are of tubular construction with pressed on lobes as I recall. (I know that sounds really cheap, but it has distinct engineering advantages to a cast and ground camshaft.)

If in doubt, it's real easy for a machinist to check the cams for straightness.

if i had enough money, id make some carbon composite cams
