So, 2.5L with MTX... what's reasonable mileage to expect for clutch life? I know it is highly dependent on driving conditions... I do the majority of my miles in stop & go in the city, but I don't abuse it and know how to drive correctly (I don't ride the clutch).

Thoughts?.... or when did yours go?

mine is an atx, but i would say that until you experience trouble that you are fine. i have an 86 escort with 240,000 miles and never touched the clutch. i also have an 89 ranger and i have never changed the clutch 224,000 miles. they generally are not time related, more by wear and tear.

I, too, have an Escort -- okay, I have two Escorts. Anyway, my '82's clutch was still going when 3rd gear went out around 250,000 miles -- and it started life as a rental car! Plus, thousands of those miles came from my driving for Domino's for a few years! You wanna talk about stop-and-go driving?!? My '87 Escort has 212,000 miles on it, and still has the original clutch. So yeah, just don't abuse/ride it, and it should last a long time.

My car is at 60K

I took over ownership of the car at about 30K from my brother. It's been at 173whp+ (as dynoed), and 1 year ago I added my N2O.

It still grabs strong, however during hard shifts with a 55 shot, I can burn my clutch to hell...

However, it's only seen 1 full bottle.

I blew my diff in my SVT at around 98,000 miles. When I put it all back together I replaced the clutch on principle, although it didn't need it. I drove it like I stole it since 69,000 miles too! The clutch disc probably had 50% of its life left.

are the clutch springs in our cars notoriously weak?

my clutch is certainly in need of replacing soon. but aside from the normal slippage and warpage, the drivetrain bounces like it's its job.

even if i just get on the gas from low RPM i can feel the whole thing bounce. i'm pretty sure it's the clutch springs...

any comments? i should try to drive someone else's car.

it's been like this since i got it at 16k mi...

im a zetec-er, im at 100K on a 1996 and im in serious need of a new one. it grinds and hums and whines and makes every possible noise known to man, but i havent had the time to stick a centerforce in yet. but mine lasted 100K and i beat the hell out of it, 15 foot burnouts, brody's, towing my friends cars when they break down (which seems to be quite frequently since they all drive hondas and cavaliers and saturns) and just generally driving like an ass.

EDIT: oh and dont forget the split second shifting from 1st to 2nd at 25mph and 2nd to 3rd at 45mph
