No a sealed enclosure would not pop open.
a shoddy failed attempt of a sealed box would blow a leak(at a seam) and sound like ass, not blow up. Its like breaking glass with bass, impossible, fish cant swim that fast....

I once had a 6X9 box with a 6.5 inch woofer mounted in it sealed and the speaker wire adpator constantly poped out until I glued it in tightly!!

I dont' really understand how excursion comes into play with SPL...the excursion isn't very loud for this sub, but its sensitivity and power handling are so high, why does the excursion matter?

To reach high volume levels, sensitivity is almost meaningless. It's all about power handling and swept volume (xmax*2*Sd or cone area X excursion.)
The reason sensitivity isn't very important in the grand scheme of things is things like power compression come into play.
