I've got some sweet neons that look great mounted under the dash (both sides) and right now, I've tapped into the switched lights that are there (the 194 bulbs that turn on when you open the doors). What I would like to do, is wire this so I can have a switch turn on the neons, AND have them turn on when the doors open.

Below is a rought schematic that cowgod wipped up:

I'd wire it like this, but I also want these things to light when the doors open too (another switched 12v source).

Any of you electrical guru's out there know how I could wire this properly, if its possible?

splice them into your existing dome light switch rather than the lights under the dash(?)...the dome light comes on when you open your doors, correct? It goes out when you shut your doors, correct? But you can also turn on the dome w/ the switch when the doors are shut, correct? Remove the actual dome lightbulb if you want to, but make a complete circuit w/ the wires using the neons as the loop rather than the dome light or find a cool colored bulb that compliments your neons.

Or go buy a junker dome light relay & doorjamb switch from a junkyard & make another circuit...

Find a switch like the one in the dome light. I am guessing that switch is powered by two positive sources. One positive I take it is coming from the door sensors, and the other positive I guess comes from a full-time positive. The switch regulates where the power is coming from, the positive with sensor-controled power, or the positive with the non-stop power. Check out a local auto parts store and see if they have switches like that. Let me know how it goes because I plan on doing a very similar thing.

EDIT: To make it simple...

Position 1: Power comes from 12 volt positive wire (always hot)

Position 2: Power comes from 12 volt positive wire (hot only when doors open)

Position 3: Off

It should have atleast 3-4 prongs on the switch.

lol im going to EDIT again:

You can just get a regular switch, have a regular non-stop 12 volt going into it to power the neons. THEN splice another positive coming from the door lights and splice it in just before the neons, but AFTER the switch. That way NO MATTER WHAT, the neons will light up when doors open, and you can turn them on when you want.

12volt+ --------fuse---switch---|---neons----ground-
door light+ ---------------------/

I promise this is my last edit, i need to do my homework.

In other words an automotive three-way switch...unsure if there is such a thing...but I can wire a house

Great ideas! I was thinking of that 3-way switch myself. Then I thought about how I might do it with a 2-way switch:

Position 1: fulltime 12v power
Position 2: power only when doors open

Since they're off just about all the time in position 2, thats like the off position. I wonder if I could do it that way..... hrm...

With a 2-way, you most likely will have two prongs: + and -. A 3-way like stated above is + and + and -. If you connect two positives on a two way, you will definately regret it, trust me! Just take the 2-way switch, and hook up the door-open positive spliced in after the switch. This way no matter what it will turn on with doors, and u can switch on and off whenever u want it on regardless of doors. I say its just easiest that way.

Example

i just did something like this (not neons, though, leds.)

anyway, the two way will work if you use an "on-on" switch, verses the two way "on-off" ones, it'll have the three prongs that you need

You need a SPDT (single pole double throw) switch. It has two on positions and some have an off position in the center. You could use a DPDT also, but you only need to use one of the poles.

A SPDT switch will have 3 prongs on it. The two outside ones are the sources and the center is the output.

Here's another cheesy diagram:

Cowgod, that's kind of what I was envisioning, and seems like what I'll end up doing. Now to find a place that sells good looking switches like that

It's been a long time since my studies in low-voltage electricity, a LONG time (obviously too long).

Lithium, looking at your example, if both 12v sources both become live (i.e. doors open and fuel the 12v switched source, AND the switch is on with the constant 12v at the same time) would that double hte voltage goign to the neons? Does voltage add up in a circuit like this? If so, I'm thinking that might toast those neon tubes' transformers

Been too long since I did something like this :/ sorry for the noob questions
