I have a 95 SE w/MTX. I recently had the driver's side half-shaft (axle and CV joint assembly) replaced to fix a thumping noise on acceleration (It didn't, BTW). Anyway now I have a problem with my Traction Control.

The traction control now activates whenever the car is going between 20 and 35 mph (approx). When it activates, the TC light goes on and I hear the TC motor. The car doesn't pull to one side or slow down, so I believe it is only the throttle control kicking in. ABS functionality seems OK. I'm now driving the car, but turning off the TC on every startup.

Though the ABS sensor for the drivers side front wheel was untouched during the replacement, the sensing ring that it reads is new (as this is part of the halfshaft). I suspect that the sensor still works and is reading the sensing ring well enough for ABS (and initial self-test), but not well enough for TC.

Looking at the old and new sensing rings, they seem to have the same number of 'teeth' (although I'm not 100% sure of this, as I haven't actually counted all the teeth on the new one -- the old one has 44). The new one looks to be in a slightly different position on the shaft, maybe 1/8" further from the tire. But looking at where the sensor is located it still seems like it is within the 'heart' of the teeth. The main difference I can see is that the old one is rusted, while the new one is shiny. Is it possible that ABS sensor is having difficulty reading due to the shinyness? (I presume this is an optical sensor). Any other ideas are appreciated.

PS. I also had both rear hubs (which have sensing rings of their own) changed at the same time. I'm presuming that the rear has nothing to do with TC.

The ABS sensers are magnetic, not optical.

The problem could be caused by the axle you have not replaced yet.
The other three axles have new reluctors on them and the sensors will be getting good signals because the reluctors are clean.
The remaining reluctor is dirty and rusted and my not be providing a strong signal as the other three are.
This can be verified by connecting a scan tool to the car and looking at the data stream from all 4 wheels while driving.

Good Call. According to the dealer, I have an 'erratic signal' from the right front (old)sensor. Is there any way to fix this, short of replacing that axle, too?

Perhaps I spoke too soon. The problem persisted even after a new passenger side axle was installed (This did cure the 'noise on acceleration' problem that I had, however). The dealership is now stumped. They checked the data streams from all sensors, tried swapping out the passenger side sensor, counted all the teeth on all the sensor rings, all without success. It currently looks like I'll be switching off the TC on each startup, unless one of you has a better idea.

An easier way to disable the system without having to turn it off each time is to disconnect the wiring harness from the TC throttle cable motor next to the coolant reservoir. TC will disable itself when it can't find that motor on the circuit.

Now, it isn't clear, but is the dealership saying that the data from all four sensors looks good now? I wonder if one of the detectors (above the ring) is bad?
