I finally found the approximate area of the leak. It seems that the refrigiant is leaking from around the radiator area. Does that means it's leaking from the condenser core? I loosely checked the lines, and they seem to be on snugly and no sign of visible leaks. The only place that I can visibibly see leak is from the radiator, and it's hissing from right around that area too. If it turns out to be the condenser core, how much will it cost for the part?

Just has a similar problem. The bracket from the P/S cooler got bent up into the condensor and wore a hole in it. There was a yellow/green gook coming out of the hole. The A/C compressor short-cycled, and did not blow cold air.

Ford service quoted me ~$600!!! ($250 for the part and 4.5 hours of labor)

A local radiator/AC shop did it for $300. The replacement part was identical to the old one (didn't look any cheaper or anything).

A big reason Ford says it takes so much labor is that the radiator, condensor and the fans all drop down as one unit [on my 99, anyway], which is a bit of a PITA.

Well, I'm going to be pulling the engine/trans out in a few weeks anyway. I just want to know if the parts will be at a reasonable price.

You were wise to go elsewhere, and I presume the a/c shop did not do this. The '97 Ford service manual says you can remove condenser separately from rad/fan assembly. I'd guess 1-1.5 hrs + 1 hr for evac/recharge, say 2.5 hr max plus material/parts.

I replaced my about a week ago. it was super easy. heres a little how to.

1. jack up the front of the car and support with stands
2. remove the splash guard tray
3. remove the power steering cooler(not the line from it) and let it hang (just for clearence)
4. there is two bolts that hold the condenser remove them(they are on the same bracket as the rad)
5. remove the lines on the passenger side
6. from the bottem push the cond. up and towards the front of the car.
7. drop it out.

install is reverse

took me about 45 mins

The bolt that holds the crash sensor behind the grill was too long for mine and it wore a hole in the cond.
