My contour's check engine light is on. The dealership said I need an "eval line". And in their words, "hopefully that should solve the problem". The part only cost about ~$100 but the labor is more.

So my question is, what is that? Is it something I can install relatively easily myself? Or do I need to bother with it at all?

Sounds like a load, but you may have their term wrong.

Get the actual code for independant verification.
Write such terms down and ask for spelling, location, etc...
Ask them for an explanation of what they want to do, even better have them write it down.
If they give you an unreadable estimate or work order, have them do it over.
Have "save part for owner" written on the work order.
If they do not return the part, raise hell.

Don't get ripped off, good luck.

Not sure what this 'eval line' thing is they're talking about.

You can get your computer codes scanned for free at AutoZone and some other auto parts places. (Unless you live in CA, where they aren't allowed to scan/reset computers) Ask for the actual code number and post it here and we'll be happy to help you identify the problem. Codes are described here:

Probably EVAP hose(line). EVAP short for evaporative emissions (fuel tank vapors) system.

First of all, go to autozone or advanced and have them pull the code. Then post on here and we'll go from there. Its sounds like the shop is feeding you a line.
