I've got an E0 with 120k miles on it now that has developed a strange shimmy or shake. It is kind of like the feeling that you get when the wheels need balancing, but for me it only happens when accelerating at higher speeds. Like in fifth if I step on the gas to try to get going 10 mph faster, the steeing wheel will shake, but only if I am accelerating. It isn't noticable just cruising. It does the same thing in different gears, but it is more noticable at higher speeds. Also, I noticed the same feeling (but less pronounced) if I am cruising and I take a long gentile curve.
I figure it has got to be something worn in the front end. It has been doing it now for a couple of months. Its not real bad, but just enough to start to annoy me. And it did pass MA safety inspection like this at Ford (maybe they didn't even check the front end?).
I looked at it when changing the oil and didn't notice anything obviously worn, tie rods, control arms, etc appeared to be good. But then again, I don't really know what to look for.
Any suggestions are appreciated. I'll probably have Ford look at it, I just don't know what would cause this. Thanks!
