I thought I saw a TSB on this, but now I can't seem to find it. Anybody else have this problem ? Is is really a problem ? Belt is tight, not worn out/cracked/etc. But I get a little flicker of a warning light when I am standing on the loud pedal. I also seem to recall others (maybe) having this happen to them. Is there a fix ? Are should I ignore it ?

Usually its a sign of a dying alternator. You may be able to get away with replacing brushes or other internals, but the whole unit may be on its way out.

In my case it was the symptoms of a dying alternator. It was only a matter of time before it died completely. Now my new one is staring to do it.

this happened on my 85 accord not to long ago i adjusted the belt just thinking it was loose. it got a little better but not for long. soon i took it off and headed to advance for them to test it the guy put it on the tester and my alternator damn near stopped the thing from turning the belt forgot to mention i put on new brushes hoping that would help it also helped a little but not enough to prevent it from dieing

Even if it's done it for 3 years ? I thought at first, many years ago that the alternator was dying, so I had it checked. It was fine, and it flashed the light at peak rpm then too. I will do a recall/TSB search, I think I saw this happening to other Tour/Tique owners. Thanks.

This is your alternator telling you that the brushes are just about worn out.

At high RPM, the brushes are worn and the springs holding them in place
are just about fully extended and they aren't applying as much pressure
to the brushes as they did when the brushes were new.
At high rpm, the extended springs allow the brushes to bounce and float
above the stator and not make contact.
When this happens you get your alternator light on your dash.

My alternator did this at 90,000 miles and I replaced it.
No more problems.....

To add to this, replacing the brushes only probably wont fix ti becuase when these alternators start doing that, the contact area the brushes brush against get out of round, causing the new brushes to have the same problem. -Nick

Nick,

I have not been able to find a rebuilding kit for our alternators.
The only way to fix them is to replace them with a rebuilt alterntor.

OK, cool then, it IS the alternator going away. Thanks so much for your answer. So now that I know that this is what it is, what's a good price for a replacement ? I haven't shopped for one, who has the best part for the best price. It doesn't necessarily have to be the cheapest, just best value. It seems like it would be as easy to replace the alt as it would be the replace brushes, right ? If I recall the alt on a Zetec is up top, in a fairly accessible place ?

I find it funny that nobody mentions how much of a pain in the butt it is to replace the alternator on the V6's. Talk about a serious design flaw (alternator location).
