The Overdrive switch is on the gear shifter, green button where your thumb would rest when holding the shifter. This switch is used to disable 4th (overdrive) gear. Check your tranny fluid level and condition. It should not be dark brown/black or smell burnt.

The button on the shifter is used to diable the Torque Converter Clutch, NOT 4th gear. You will still get three upshifts, even with the Torque Converter Clutch disabled.
Rob, what year is your GL, is it a Zetec or a Duratec, and how many miles do you have ?
When was the last time the transaxle was serviced ?

From the '97 Ford service manual: "Drive is the normal selector lever position for most forward driving conditions. This position provides all automatic shifts (first through fourth), apply and release of the torque converterter clutch, and maximum fuel economy during normal operation. Fourth gear (overdrive) may be cancelled by pressing the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) that is located in the shift knob."
