mad mad mad Let me tell the whole story..... Third gear went out. I was going to rebuild the tranny myself except I couldnt get it out of the car. So I decided I would buy a low mile tranny have a shop swap the two out and presto be done. I would later rebuild the original and recoperate my losses in money. Well i didnt quite work out, when I got the car back from the tranny shop I got under the car. For starters the steering wheel was 90 degrees off, steering rack was loose, sub frame not tighten at one corner(bolt was actually hanging!) power steering hoses on top of my exhaust, front directional wheels were on backwards, I think thats everthing from the 1st visit.
I took the car back and they fixed everything but the steering rack. I drove it for about two weeks and the replacment tranny went south.(I beleive there was something wrong with it from the junkyard.) Since the tranny shop needed to fix the steering rack I took it back to them, had the tranny removed,I rebuilt my original. and gave it to them to put in.
The junkyard wont give me my money back for the replacment or even a exchange which pisses me off but that is another story.....
I pick up the car and start the drive home everything is kosher until I start to here a whine from the tranny. Im thinking to myself "Great i screwed up the rebuild probably have the bearings to tight." I am almost home so I continue. When I get to the house the first thing I do is get under the car. Front motor mount loose, one of the shift linkage cables is missing the bushing and is just hanging there, but hey they got the steering rack tight  I sart to check the fluid level and take out the fill plug , stick my pinky in the hole....dry. Hmmm maybe they didnt top it up all the way. I then stick a flexible magnet in the hole....still dry. mad Well hey lets take the drain plugout and see if they PUT FLUID IN. Not a drop "holi $hit"
I tow it back they put fluid in and everything seems fine. I go home, go to work, take a lunch break and on the way back the shifting is getting real notchy then..... I cannot get it in any gear. Feals like there is air in the hydralics... there was I blead it out, but it still doesnt want to go in gear, I get it home change the fluid, no metal (but who knows what the magnet looks like) It can go in gears now... but VERY difficult. It wont go in revearse, and when I can get it to shift to 2nd it sounds almost like clicking CV joints. I am taking it back Monday but would like to hear some ideas to what has happened befor this place gets tired of me. I also found a unattached ground wire.
Thanks for any input on either what has happened to the tranny, what I should do about the junkyard, and what I should do about the tranny shop. I now wish I would have taken the extra effort to remove the tranny myself, I wouldnt be sinking in this boat right now if I had. frown

NEVER EVER HAVE A JUNKYARD ASSY (ENGINE,TRANS ETC) FITTED WITHOUT HAVING IT CHECKED INSIDE...its false economy, we know how MTX's have problems, chances of getting a good 'used' one are slim.Sounds like the tranny shop was not well veresed in Contour engine & trans removal !!!We buy ued & new(ex Ford ) parts at HMS all the time ,we ALWAYS strip the transmissions down. For the sake of a few hrs labor you are safe.To be honest I dont think you have any come back on the junkyard, you bought 'as seen'.Did you ask the trans shop to 'strip & check/ repair" or just 'fit it'?.You would have been better off having the existing trans repaired....why didnt the trans shop offer that?

Well the tranny has a warranty 90 days but they dont want to honor it because they say it didnt have any oil in it. (they never looked at it) It had plenty of oil I drained it when it went south. Plus they say the tranny was from a 99 w/ 7200 miles, thats mainly why I went with that option.
Their are far and few shops around here that I would let touch a manual tranny. I am glad(although I would have never let this shop rebuild it)they didnt try to rebuild it. I think I would be in deeper crap now. I at one time was a BMW automotive machinist and I have seen a lot of shops butcher up a simple job. Its very scary on how unprofessional this buisness has become. If I had no knowledge of manuals I would have sent the original to you but the tranny shop have mo cart for my car after the tranny was removed. They didnt want my car taking up space in their bay. Trust me I am still kicking myself for letting someone take the tranny out, I probably could have done it but it would have taken to long without a lift.....

The shop is giving you BS.Once he engine & trans is out its no big deal to loose assemble the front subframe/suspension so the car can be moved ..'taking up a bay' is the oldest trick in the book for pushing you to let them get parts...any parts...asap.many shops 'pull' the trans for customers...ship it to us...we upgrade or repair and ship back for refit.Very simple.

Any thoughts on what the noise in the tranny is. I can not tell if the noise is in the bellhousing or the tranny itself.
Thanks a lot guys.

If the noise stops when you depress the clutch its a bearing.....

Liten to Terry man I had the same problem with a yunkyard tranny that I bought. Until HMS came to the rescue. I ha put about 25000 miles since then no a sigle problem.
I also paid lot less money with HMS, and that is not counting the time the car spend in the junk yard

Sounds to me like YOU should be the one getting tired of them! I've been an ASE Cert. mechanic for ten or so years, and I'm surprised you put up with so much sloppieness. Mechanics that sloppy cannot thrive well in this world. It's just not good business. I can see them getting one little clip or something misplaced on a tranny swap of this caliber, but the big fat list of things they slipped up on, on yours, is INCREDIBLE! You need to find a different mechanic. Trust me, it's not worth the money you think you might be saving. Find somebody certified, and ask to see their certificates. You need to see the shop's credentials before you trust them with your car.
