I was driving from my school in Buffalo to my house in Rochester and looked down at the gages to see that the coolant light was on and my car was over heating!!! I have 77,000 miles on my car so I'm guessing I'm well over due for a new water pump, and possibly a theromastat. I called AAA and they sent out a tow truck, which towed me from Buffalo to Rochester. The garage said they would not be able to look at my car until Monday a.m. because this happened Friday afternoon and they werebooked for the day. Any ideas of what else it might be or how much to repair? Thanks guys.

$50 part and 1 hour labor tops.

So yes a shop will gladly put it to you. $150 sound like a fair shop price.

However being as you can't shop around you may get it worse...

Yeah, Ford will do it for about $400...I know that's a dealership price, but, a shop may try and screw ya too...Like Demon said, $150 is a FAIR price, but not neccesarily what they will charge. Hope they don't try and stick it to you though, and I hope there was no major damage done to your car...

I just got the bill from the place and they want $210 for the water pump and thermostst and labor. I'm not sure what the going rate is on a thermostat but I think that that price is reasonable considering water pump install should have been in the ball park of $150 right?? Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

Personally, I think that price is a bit high considering it's such an easy repair (you can search to find out more on the subject). But then again, considering the situation you were in, you could have been screwed over much worse

WOW. I had mine replaced about a year ago, and the ford dealer charged me $338 for labor and just a water pump.
I really got screwed.

When you take it to the stealer, they replace the entire water pump housing, which around here costs ~$140 in parts alone. The impeller itself only costs about $50 for the cheap plastic one, but I'd recommend getting the one with the metal impeller from NAPA. I think it only costs a bit more (maybe ~$80), and it won't break. Replacing only the impeller part takes about 20 minutes (An hour tops if you're not mechanically inclined). Replacing the entire housing does take a bit more work.

Do a search to find the part # and how to replace it - it's been mentioned many times before.

I paid in the low $200. I paid extra for a Ford part, that was 3 water pumps ago. The Mechanic told me that Ford keeps redesigning the pump because it is so troublesome.

ok i just did mine. $65 for the metal impellar from NAPA. about 2 hours worth of time to take out the old and put in the new if you know what righty tighty, lefty loosy means. i did it, it was an easy repair. i would be willing to bet that if you have installed anything on you car before, you can do the waterpump.
