Does anyone know if there is software available for this. What I want to do is connect a laptop in through the OBDII port to be able to read trouble codes at the very least, but also to monitor engine performance on a computer screen. Any help would be appreciated.

http://www.obd-2.com

Probably one of the best packages out there, especially considering the man who sells and supports it.

How about checking out the site instead of blabbering on ignorantly.

Alex Pepper's OBD-II setup can datalog "anything" the PCM sees. I state this one first as that sounds a LITTLE important.

Allows for Manufacturer's enhanced log in. (nothing else does - for instance want to datalog the IMRC operation in real time verses any other PCM parameters! I rest my case!)

Allows commands to be sent directly to the PCM.

Has countless diagnostic screens and testing patterns.

The latest update (it's updated non-stop) has even more datalogging and comparison ability in it I have yet to fully explore. I LOVE the new logging screens.

...Oh yeah...
It also reads CEL codes. Also impending codes, hidden codes, multiple freeze frame, open & closed loop testing, O2 signal patterns, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc...

Nothing out there can touch it for what it does. Plus the fact it's under $100 to boot! (check out the always ongoing Taurus club group buy!)

Check out our GB section. Right now I believe it's going for $86 for the Ford unit shipped. $100 for a 2 combo unit or ~$115 for a triple unit. I'm still working on getting a laptop, but I'm getting this before then. GB ends October 1st.

Stand alone engine management has about as much to do with OBD2 scanning as Heidi Klumm does with an Idaho potato farmer.

Stand alone engine management, the title of the post, is about controlling the engine. Systems like TEC2, SDS, and Hondata come to mind. For that matter, unfortunately, FastnFurious comes to mind since Vin Diesel used that term and now every high schooler has decided their 93 Tercel needs it.

OBD2 is a federally-standardized codeset used to diagnose engine performance, particularly related to emissions. Yes, D is for 'diagnosis'. D does NOT stand for 'control', 'standalone', or 'management'.
