OK..here's my tale of woe. My Mercury "mistake" has beeen acting very weird past few weeks. When I accelerate rapidly from let's say a complete stop, the RPM's will quickly hit 3000, however, as soon as it hits 3000, the car will start surging and sputtering. If I let off, then accelerate normal the car drives fine. Now hear this, if I'm cruising at let's say 2500 RPM in 4th or 5th gear then nail it, the car will gradually pick up speed, I'll feel the secondaries kick in around 3500 RPM or so, but no sputter, It's only under extreme circumstances like when I take the RPMs up to 3000 very quickly (rapid acceleration), you know like when you nail it in first gear to kick some Honda's butt, does the car sputter and break up at 3000 RPM or so. Any clues? The car has 37,000 miles on it. It's the V6 with 5 speed. A side note, a couple of times this past summer, the car died right after starting it and wouldn't restart unless I reset the PCM or wait a while. I'm starting to hate this car! Help!!!!! Doug

This has the earmarks of a fuel pump problem.

I'm going to lean toward a fuel problem. No check engine light at all? sounds like as you "get on it" and your secondaries are about to kick in, you're starving for more fuel. if i were you, i'd refrain from trying to race honda's, especially vtec's. i have a duratec, but my daily driver is a 92 accord with a 95 JDM H22a vtec motor, and by the time my duratec is starting to whine out, my vtec is just kicking in, bringing me up past 8,000rpm. so, since i drive a mystique, you can't call me rice, but i will put my accord up against any duratec/svt. i've already smoked an SHO... he was not a happy camper... just a very surprised and confused guy lololol.

I hear you, those VTECs rock!
I feel the problem is fuel too, but I really wonder if it's the pump? Could a clogged fuel filter cause this type of problem? I have only 15000 miles since it was last replaced. Maybe the camel piss they sell for gas around here on Long Island was full of dirt or sediment.
The thing that disturbs me is that if I gradually accelerate, I can rev this mutha up to 6000 with no problems. The key is to do it gradually. I had a CEL last week, I just reset the PCM and it hasn't appeared since.
BTW...could a clogged air filter be to blame? If it is the pump, how many bananas is that going to set me back?

change the air filter, even if it looks clean.. your engine is starving for AIR... bet this is the problem, and if not it does not cost you much to find out, and use a good air filter, not one of those $2.00 jobs from Joe's bargain auto center or walmart/kmart... use the original ford filter...

(runs out to buy a proper filter)
While you're at it, a fuel filter is relatively cheap too. Time to replace it anyway. If these two inexpensive things fail to solve your problem, then its time to pull the pump & check for fuel tank debris.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Thanks..
It's funny but this all started after replacing the air filter with a Pep Boys cheapo. I thought it was coincidence, but it really seems like it's starving for air. I'll change the fuel filter too. Cheap insurance!

Thanks.. Really nice site. BTW...I've had this car for 1.5 years and while it's a blast to drive, the car is very finicky. I just hope it's not the fuel pump..cash is little tight right now!
