Now that my '95 Contour GL (Zetec) is running pretty good I am wondering why the engine causes so much vibration through the steering wheel when it idles.

The idle is smooth and even, but the steering wheel has been like "magic fingers" ever since the car was at about 60K. It is a regular hand massage when you are sitting at a light!

Is the vibration due to motor mounts that have hardened?

I agree with Tronx. Mine has developed a noticable vibration that's really noticable in the cabin when sitting at a light with the AC on. When I was checking around, I noticed the tranny case is resting heavily on the sub-frame. The rear and front motor mounts are squished and flatened.

Well, realize that my car has 170K on it ('95 GL with a Zetec) but it started the steering wheel idle vibration before 100K. My AC compressor is out, so I bypassed it with a non-AC belt.
When the AC did work the car vibrated like crazy! It's not bad now, but it still bugs me! At least it is a SMOOOTH vibration!

The engine can't idle much smoother actually.
I have just done a MAJOR tune up (everything if you've read my posts.) Even a new coil pack.

Must be the motor mounts.

Over the year I've had my car I've learned a few things.

These engines run hot. Deal with it or do something about it. I tried to do everything and went as far as to change my waterpump to fix it. Still no good. It gets hot and that is that.

These cars have a [censored] vibration at idle. Deal with that too. Although I've fixed mine to a managable vibration by changing the plug wires. It helped more than I thought it would.

Zetecs have many aftermarket parts. Look up the focus parts list and many of them can be transferred over.

Yes I know the last part really doesn't have much to do for this thread but I did say I've learned a FEW things.

Like I said, I changed my plug wires and plugs, cleaned the maf, and other misc. things that only helped a little. As long as the car isn't going dead (like mine was) then you should be ok.

Yeah.. the car does run hot.

The 2 big things that help me have been the replacement of
the PCV extention hose and Serp Belt. They put on a Gates
Belt and the car runs much much better. The PCV hose you
can find under the car right before the IAC. The heat of
the engine melts a hole around the first bend. Also the
breather hose on the back side on top of the engine tends
to suffer the same problem.

This will definitely transfer a lot of vibration into the cabin. I had the same problem, and new motor mounts helped tremendously.

My vibration started when the car was in the 65K mile range and increased until it reached the point that it is in now around the 120K mark. I am tempted to think that it is the motor mounts. I figure the heat and age hardened them. Maybe I'll replace them someday. Then again, I can just drive along and enjoy the hand massage!
