I have a 96 GL with 2.0 lit(Zetec) and A/C and recently I noticed that belt is squeeling when cold.Reading some previous posts and from some of my (limited)experience I think it is tensioner that is going bad...
What kind of tools are required and any spec. instructions? Is it straight forward bolt on part that has that tensioner arm+pulley on it?
On some of my previous car there was a mark where tensioner arm should be (small arrow or similar). Is there something on Contours similar to this? And finally how hard/soft should that serpentine belt be? Mine was replaced under warranty once at around 40000kms. Now I have 77000kms...
Thank you.

The job is straightforward under certain conditions. First, it helps if you remove the motor mount that's above the belt. This gives you access. Wedge some kind of support under the oil pan to hold up the engine while the mount is off. Alternately, I think you can jack the car up and access it from beneath.

The tensioner has a half inch square socket, I think, to allow you to twist the spring to de-tension it and slip the belt off, so a half-inch socket wrench or breaker bar is good to have. Once the belt is out of the way, I think it's just one large bolt that holds the tensioner on... 16mm? 19mm? 22mm? I forget.
