A dirty fuel filter would not cause your tranny to slam. Some signs of a dirty filter are rough idle at startup, poor fuel pressure and stalling. Sounds like you have some issues with your tranny. Try changing your fluid and inspect it for pieces of metal. Small pieces are normal but larger pieces are not. You may want to take it to a mechanic if you are not comfortable with this.

Just regurgitating the Haynes recommendation.
I hate to admit this, but my OEM fuel filter outlasted my first engine. 88k miles on it; still on the original (returnable) fuel pump.

Maybe they give you a new guide when you get to that mileage. p.s. Cabin air filter should be changed every 20,000 miles.

Cheap and easy insurance. Maybe a 5 minute job & $7-8 Get a Purolator/Motorcraft & make sure the clips are in the box.

uh, my niece's '89 Beretta (which used to be mine) has 185,000 miles on the original fuel filter...we HAVE changed the oil occasionally, though.

Golof, you might have a clogged main cat. That will suck up the horsepower like nobody's business.
