I have a hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear when I back off the throttle quickly at high rpms. My car is an automatic has 90k miles. I heard that a lot of contours do this.

My question is do they all do this from the beginning when the ATX is new? Does this damage the transmission? Thanks for you replies.

dont know if it damages it but yeah i think they do that when they are new because when my transmission was replaced it did the samething you are describing and other wise the transmission shifts fine

As hard as the bang shift is, it's hard to believe that it can't damage the tranny. When I got my chip, it helped out a lot. Also a lotta people have had good result by replacing the TSS with the newest one. Though others have had problems with it.

Tom,

There is a new Turbine Speed Sensor that cures this.

There is plenty of info in this thread...
1-2"BANG" Shift is GONE !!..

I'm going to have to try this, even though in 2000 I made the dealer do TSB 98-13-11 involved a re-program (FTPT 12a650-dpa) and swapped the servo for one with a stiffer spring.
Anyhow it still gets confused but not with force it once did.
Who found this out?????? THANKS!!!!!!! Chris?????
Tnx Paul

I replaced the TSS on my 95 and it has improved the 'bang shift'. The sensor fit correctly on my 95 which did not have
the yellow paint markings described in some of the forum discussions. This is about a 15-20 minute job.

Kermit I have a 96 atx also. Did you eventually change your sensor to the new one mentioned in the article? Did it help?

I replaced my TSS. It greatly helped the problem, but it did not alleviate it totally. It's more of a small bump now than the incredible jarring that it used to be.

Replaced the TSS in my '99 V-6. The difference was huge. Much better behaved tranny all around. I also have a Superchip that gives me slightly firmer shifts at higher RPMs than normal - it helped too.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
