I've just finished an engine swap and want to clear OBD-II codes. The manual is saying pulling the battery cable will give you an error code for loosing the memory, how do I clear these codes now w/o a diognostic tool?

Yes, I agree, pull the cable. I've never had any kind of error resulting for disconnecting the battery.
Alternatively, you can also pull some fuses under the hood to clear the memory. I do this only to save the settings on my aftermarket stereo. On both my '98s, I pull fuses 4 and 11 for about 20 minutes. Edit: You don't list your year or anything, so be careful. Fuses may be different for different years.

After clearing KAM, you will get a P1000. This is not an error code however. It tells two things:
1) Yes, the OBDII link is alive. 2) The first OBDII cycle has not completed, so it can not report on the status.

To answer your question, don't worry about the P1000. It will clear itself once the first OBDII cycle completes. You can't clear it anyway.

Thank you. Sounds like I have a bad sensor or fault then. The check engine light comes on after pulling the battery cable. I guess I need to invest in an ODB-II reader, does anyone know any resources for an inexpensive reader?

P0171 is a lean code I believe. It could be a vacuum leak. Spray carb cleaner around the intake with the car at idle and listen for an engine stumble.
If it's not that, try cleaning your MAF, resetting KAM, and installing a new air filter. Do these three at the same time. Do a search on this board on the subject of cleaning the MAF and clearing KAM.

Check out the GB forum for alex pepper's software/hardware which is cheaper than that and does same thing.
