I have a 95 Contour SE. It starts OK, idles just fine. When I start out it has no power and appears to be missing. It does not feel like it is hitting on all six cylinders. I am thinking new plugs and maybe wires... These plugs have 50,000 on them. The originals only lasted 45,000 before a miss developed. It started to knock a while back so I boosted the octane to the middle grade. Suggestions...

Apparently my guess on the plugs and wires was correct. In addition, the coil pack needs to be replaced. The wires were arcing and apparently have shorted the coil pack out. It is not running on all cylinders. It is missing either one or two of the cylinders.

So it sounds like you installed new plugs/wires and your problem went away ? Which plugs did you install ? Motorcrafts I hope. Did you change plugs recently to another brand ?

The plugs are Motorcraft as well as the wires. I not really that big on experimenting with other brands. My plans for the car are to keep it, buy a Dodge Dakota early next year and use this as my third car. It will be fun to play with it every now and then.

Did the miss go away ? Was it the wires ? How do you know ? Have you ever had any of your plugs crack ? What did you pay for the coil pack ? I am having recurrent missing problems that I just can't seem to track down. The car checks out perfectly on the diagnostic, but every couple of days one of my $10 Motorcraft plugs has a cracked insulator. The dealer says it's impossible for an engine to do that to a plug. So I paid $160 for the dealer to install the plugs, and now they're busted again, so we'll see what the dealer has to say now. Because I told them SPECIFICALLY that it was busting plugs, and that it had done it 3 times prior. But they blamed the breakage on me. Now they can't use that excuse.

Did you see the post about the Zetec using 2 different plugs for 1,4 and 2,3 or something like that? I'm not sure what the story is on these Zetec plug issues, but cracked insulators seems pretty extreme. There has to be a cause for this Are you using the same type of plugs/wires/coil that others are using without the cracked insulator problem? I think if the problem were mechanical, you would see/hear where the piston or whatever was hitting the plug....

It's just the insulator that's broken, so it can't be anything mechanical, it has to be electrical. It blows the insulator out and leaves a big, black carbon trail. The dealer accused me of breaking them as I installed them, so I had the dealer install them, they still blew out. And yes they are the correct plugs, I went through all that, so I do have the correct Motorcraft, fine wire, low resistence plugs in her. I also went round and round with my Ford parts guy with the two different plugs thing, he said there never has been and never will be a Ford that calls for two different plugs in the same motor. So I have been there, done that. But I appreciate your effort, thanks.
