Hi Pete,

This is something a little deeper than that. This is something that only started after I had some manual tranny work performed. I never had the hang probs before that. Now since the tranny work was done it's huge. I admitt that I have patched the problem by using the throttle hang fix but the car is not running just as it should as a result. I'm really anxious to put the new TPS in, remove the copper cap(throttle hang fix), and then see what happens. The TPS was only $30.00 so it's not costing a lot to find out.

What I don't understand is how some MTX work could ever cause this problem to happen immediately afterwards and to be so prominent. BTW, what actually causes the classic throttle hang problem?

Now I am all confused. I had the same problem with my throttle hanging when I shifted and the dealership charged $148 for a new 02 sensor. He also told me there are two sensors? One in the front and one in the rear? Does this sound right?

My check engine light came on the other day and I am pretty sure it is the 02 sensor again. HELP!!! shocked

Thanks,
Brian

The Throttle hang is caused by Emission Controls that ar built into the computer's software.
The only way around it is the TH Fix.
When your transmission was worked on, they had to disconnect your battery.
This would reset your computer and possibly cause the Throttle Hang to appear,
when it wasn't there before.
It isn't related to the work done on the transmission,
it is related to the computer being reset and relearning to idle and drive.

The Black Air Bypass tube doesn't alleviate Throttle hang.
It is there to get rid of the moosing caused by the older piping.
The older piping would resonate the moosing sound, and make it loud enough for you to hear.
Removing the piping, removes the moose.

You should be happy.
You Tour is actually doing what it is supposed to do!

Jon,

Thanks for the link. I read through the entire posting and was curious about the following comment
"Over at CEG, i read a topic where Ford has released a Throttle Hang fix.. Something bout a new connector and harness for your TPS or something. The guy says it has worked great so far, but so have other fixes Ford has done to correct this problem in the past (IAC replacment)."

Last night I swapped out my TPS for a brand new one, diconnected the battery to clear the computer, re-connected and then went for a rip. No good. Didn't change anything. What's the deal with the TPS? I unclipped the plug, removed the 2 screws holding the unit in-place and put the new part on. Is there something else I should have done? When you take off the TPS you can see a copper colored metal piece that comes out of the MAF, do I need to do anything with that?
Anyone?
Thanks,
Rob

Pete,

My Contour is not doing what it's supposed to be doing. There's throttle hang and then there's THROTTLE HANG. The hang I'm getting hangs for a LONG time, it's wicked and there is something wrong. The new TPS did not fix the problem but I suspect maybe a new O2 sensor in the back might.

Have you let someone else who owns an MTX Tour drive your car ?
They can tell you what is normal Throttle Hang and what isn't.

I saw the topic in the General section here.. Somebody said Ford issued a fix for this and installed it.. something about new wires or a connector. Search the general.. its probablly 2-3 pages back?

There are definatly 2 distinct types of TH.. One is normal, the other is something going bad! Ive experienced both in my car and can tell the difference.

I don't know anyone else that has a Contour so this isn't an option. What I may do is go and test drive a MTX Contour to see the difference. However, I have owned my Contour for a long time and there is absolutely no way that all the sudden having RPM's hang and actually increase by themselves for that long could be normal. Dangerous-yes normal-no. If it's all about getting rid of exess emmissions in the exhaust system and the O2 sensor guages that, then I think the tranny shop did a bad when they put my exhaust back together. They damaged the O2 sensor in the back or front or something.
