The rule for calculating resistance is if the resistors (or whatever, in this case subs) are wired in series, you just add the resistances to get the total. If wired in paralell, you use the formula (1/R1)+(1/R2)=(1/Req.) Req. is the equivalent resistance or the total, so if you have two 4 ohm subs in paralell on one channel, then the equivalent load is 2 ohms. In your case, the amp is having a 4 ohm load on each channel, but if you bridged it and wired in paralell, it would be a 2 ohm load.
