My check engine light came on a few months ago so i took it to Pep Boys so they could charge me 65 bucks to tell me it tripped for no reason, now it came on again, went off on its own after about a week then came back on again. i am about 1000 miles over due for an oil change. also when it came on the second time i did run the gas down to just about empty so i thought it was an inticator light or something. does anyone know if this light acts as a low fuel/need an oul change light? i had an 88 bronco 2 that did this. by the way the car is a 96 contour with the 4 cyl, gl model. i love it

AFAIK the CEL is not a reminder light for oil changes or low fuel.

Try bringing the car to Autozone. I think they will check your codes for free.

And welcome to CEG !

the 95 was the only year that can be checked with the hand held code reader (i think), it needs to be hooked up to the big boy.

I've had that light on my '95 Mystique for as long as I can remember (104K miles now). It comes on about 5 minutes after I start the car. At this point I don't even pay attention to it anymore.

In fact, if it stays OFF for too long I start to feel nervous! laugh

I have a 2000 CSVT and the hand held scan tool from Autozone works great, especially last week when I used it and I have code #0136, which is 02 sensor, bank #1 sensor #2.....hmmmm, another 02 sensor. Last time it was code #0144, which was bank #1, sensor #1 but that one had DENT in it, hmmmm I wonder how that happened confused mad eek
