if you specified that you have a 98 contour GL with a v6, the autopart store should have sold you pre-gapped spark plugs made for your car only (bosch platinum plus gapped and threaded for the contour). Its always a good idea to check, but i'm pretty sure they come pre gapped.

edit: my old stock motorcraft are at 0.051 inches

gaps are the same for SVT and contour gl, so according to this site, http://woodfam.com/ryan/svt/essential_info.html

it's

Spark plug gap - 1.3mm

I'm going to carquest tomorrow to pick up some autolite double plats for my zetec. If I tell them what it's for, do they take them outta the box and gap them?

when i went to the store, there was a separate autolite double platinum part number for my car and another part number for another car, and so on...they come pre gapped in the box, they don't have to be messed with to work....can somebody please back me up? i feel like i'm screaming inside an empty, dark airport terminal, and there are two people behind glass staring, wondering what i'm doing....

Check the gap yourself. The tool costs like $3, and it takes 5 minutes.

Most plugs DO NOT come pre-gapped!

Autolites do not come pre-gapped!

It takes but a few minutes to gap your plugs. It is a very simple and necessary step when changing them. Do not skip this step.
Even for plugs that specify a pre-gapped setting. It is always a very smart idea to check them. A lot of them are off right out of the box!

Stock gap for the Duratec is .054
Don't forget the anti-sieze either...

NEVER expect standard spark plugs to be pre gapped. The Bosch+4 type cannot be gapped so if you are using that type you have no choice. If it happens to be the correct gap out of the box, great, but it almost never is.

The above poster has given you the correct gap, but it is also posted on the emissions decal under the hood.
