No.
Ummm, YES!
You mean they don't have a compact I believe. The Focus should be classified as a Sub-Compact, then the Contour was a Compact, Taurus is mid sized, and the Crown Vic is the full sized.
Ummm NO! Taurus is fill size. Contour was mid. Crown Vic is Luxury.
Uhhhhhhhhmmmm maybe Consumerguide lists the Taurus as a midsize...and def not a Fill size

I really don't care what you call it, I like the size and right now, Ford doesn't have one in that size. But just to keep the argument running, our Taurus SHO looks like a full size car to me when it's sitting next to my Contour SVT.

I think the Taurus is a mid-size sedan.
The new Ford Five hundred will be between the Taurus and Crown Victoria.
Then their is the new Ford Futura. According to Ford's website, "The 2006 Ford Futura is aimed squarely at the heart of the midsize car segment and will be marketed in both size and price between the Ford Focus and the upcoming Ford Five Hundred."
Sure, the ST220 is awesome. It starts at £23,100. That is over $36,000 US.
I just don't think given our market it would be all that successful at that price.
Europeans are willing to pay much more. Talk of "Ford are you listening, we want the ST220" just does not make sense.

Contour is in the "Compact" class Taurus is in the "Midsize" class Crown Victoria is in the "Full Size" class No if's and's or but's about it. Go to any auto information site, that's what you'll see. That's how the government classifies them...just like SUV's are "Station Wagons" There is no "Luxury" class, not like you speak of it, Todd.

I don't think you can compare the price in British Pounds to US dollars. There is a value added tax (VAT) in Europe. I know for a fact that a Jaguar S-Type R that cost about $62,000 would have been considerably more if you took the price in Pounds (per Jaguar's website) and used the exchange rate to figure what it would cost in dollars.

Of course it is not an exact science but it illustrates a point. The S Type R would start around $74,000 US using the same calculation I did with the ST220.
If it would be viable I don't doubt Ford would bring more cars over. But given the market conditions, government over regulation, and other conditions it just would not be workable.
I just read a good article about how the Focus is evolving here. It probably won't use the same platform as the new European Focus as originally planned because it would take the US Focus out of its target price range for the US segment. In Europe the Focus is not simply an entry level car like it is here and people are willing to pay more for it over there.

I think the reason Ford hasn't brought it over, is because they make their money on trucks and SUVs. I heard a radio program about the state of US car manufacturers and one of the people said Ford isn't a car manufacturer, it's a truck manufacturer.

And the reason they don't make that much on cars is because they can't sell them at a huge markup like trucks because the market won't allow it.
Ford would love to make a huge profit on cars too but they have not been all that sucessful at it lately.

Well, in general they pay more for cars, but less for other of life's necessities. An old brit mag said a MONDEO ST220 costs from- £23,000 to £24,000. aka 36,000 American and 54,000 Canadian!(Maybe it's costs 10 grand more to have a HATCHback ) Of course they aren't going to be able to run the same prices here. A Focus runs from 16,000 to 24,000 American!!!(Not incl HiPerf versions) right now.
I don't know how they can over-price those cars over, esp when cars depreciate EVEN FASTER than a cavalier (hehe) So price isn't a prob, but Anti-Replacing-Taurus-Execs...
