My plan was to purchase a 2005 Mustang. But the Contour's tranny broke a year and a half too early. So I am stuck sharing the 02 Windstar with the wife until I find something to drive.

Options:
1. Buy a $3000 car just to get around in. Something like a old Accord or Camry. I would have to take out a small loan, or have no money left to place down on the Mustang.
2. Assume someone's leased vehicle for 12-18 months. I see several VW New Beetles for the $300/mth range with lots of miles left. No money down, save up more money for the Mustang down payment.
3. Buy a horse and buggy from the Amish and hoof it.

Hmm...thats a tough one. One option is to get a junk yard or used tranny for the contour and get it fixed. I blew the tranny on my jeep grand cherokee a while back, and it was like $2200 to get a new tranny, but I could get a rebuilt one installed for 800-900. I ended up getting rid of it, but hey that was just me.

the 05 mustang is sweet, although rwd might pose a problem in the winter. You might see what kinda of "beater" you can get for a few grand anyhow-- you might end up needing it for the winter. Id look around and see what you can find in the local car classifieds, etc...maybe ebay or yahoo autos are worth checking out too. Good luck!

No problem, I need a car with A/C. Today its 90 degrees, and the Honda would get me to work, but not very dry. Brandon, how is the car coming? Still have a problem with a cylinder?

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago. I had been thinking about getting something new (the LS had 81k miles and I was kind of tired of it) then the TC went. This killed the sell the LS plan for something new. I did look at and test the following. Oh, like you, I didnā??t need a four door family hauler.

Acura RSX-S, I donā??t have to comment on the build quality or the engine.
Mitsu Eclipse GTS, Built for a 5 7 girl. No head room soft suspension and no zip.
Sentra spec V Real cheap interior, no leather, too much torque steer.
Tiberon GT, 10 year 100k power train warrantee, no head room and no ABS without moon roof.
Celica GTs, under powered, cheap interior overpriced.
Civic coup. No power.

Couldnā??t even look at a mustang because of my pledge not to give ford another nickel until they make good on my paint.

So in the end I fixed the tranny, replaced the struts and lower arm, a new set of tires and its better then new. All for $1600 (I did the labor myself).

What is wrong with your MTX and how much is it going to cost to fix?

"although rwd might pose a problem in the winter"

The 05 Stangs will have traction control and trac loc. RWD is not "unsafe in snow" these days. Some have driven FWD too much and forgetton the modern advances in RWD technology.

The Transmission went pop when I down shifted from 3rd to 2nd going about 40 mph. I wanted to pass a car, so I don't think I let up on the gas very much. No engagement in any gear, not even reverse. Lots of red tranny fluid poured out when I parked it. I haven't priced it to fix it.

Stick with option 1 if you still want the Mustang dreams to stay alive. Find something with air that still works or has been converted to the new CFC free stuff. Stick with something boring to drive, or the temptations to modify will overcome your saving ability towards the Mustang... enter an '86 T.A. and my similar story of saving for said '05 pony car...
